What to know about Art Briles: Grambling State offensive coordinator, ex-Baylor coach

TUSCALOOSA, AL. - Art Briles has been hired as offensive coordinator at Grambling State.


Briles was fired was fired as coach of Baylor in 2015 after several sexual assault allegations within the football program.

Here are three things to know about the 66-year-old Briles:

Forgettable fallout Briles spent eight seasons at Baylor compiling a 65-37 overall record and two Big 12 championships. His start player was quarterback Robert Griffin III from 2008-11. He won the school's first and only Heisman Trophy.

An investigation surrounding Briles by Pepper Hamilton Law found the university to have a "fundamental failure" on acting on the allegations against its coach. After Baylor, Briles' trail was CFL, Italy, high schools Before his tenure at Baylor, Briles was the coach at Houston from 2003-07. After he was fired by Baylor, Briles was set to join the staff of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League in August of 2017 but backlash to his hiring ended his time there the same day.

He later spent time in the Italian Football League in 2018 and was a high school coach in Mount Vernon, Texas, in 2019-20.

Overall, Briles has compiled a 99-65 record over 13 seasons with two Big 12 conference championships, 2013 and 2014.

Family affair Briles is the father of Arkansas offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, who has been with the program since the hiring of coach Sam Pittman in 2019.

The father-son duo coached together from 2008-15 at Baylorr and helped lead one of the top offenses in the country. Kendal was promoted to offensive coordinator and became a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2015, given to the nation's top college football assistant coach.
