By: Brett Greenberg

TUSCALOOSA NEWS- The high school football season is in full swing in the COVID-19 era, with fifteen games scheduled for Friday night in the Tuscaloosa area.

Schools will continue to enforce coronavirus precautions during these contests. Here is a look at three top games:

Friday

Northridge at Paul W. Bryant

The Northridge Jaguars, who have already equaled their 2019 win total, look to continue their dominant start to the 2020 season. The Jaguars' defense is currently holding teams to three points per game. In the opener, the Northridge defense forced three turnovers while running back, PJ Hall rushed for two touchdowns. Northridge held its opponent scoreless in Week Two with a 26-0 victory.

Paul W. Bryant is coming in winless. Coach Eldrick Hill is entering his seventh season and looks to right the ship. Bryant showed improvement in its second week, losing by six points.

The two are 9-9 all-time against each other. Bryant won in 2019, 23-6.

Brookwood at Hillcrest

Brookwood and head coach Mike Bramblett have started the 2020 campaign 0-2. Brookwood coach Mike Bramblett is in his second season as coach of the Panthers and looks to get into the win column this week. With nearly 10 players in quarantine, Bramblett said the Panthers are just trying to field enough players to play.

The Hillcrest Patriots have started the season with a perfect 2-0 record, powered by sophomore quarterback Ethan Crawford and stout defense. Crawford and the Patriots' offense are averaging nearly 39 points per game. Running back Tyler Smith and wide receiver Anthony Meyers both scored in a 30-point week one win.

Hillcrest posted a 52-8 victory in 2019.

Fort Dale Academy at Tuscaloosa Academy

Fort Dale Academy opened on the wrong side of a blowout but looks to get back in the win column. The Eagles lost in the first round of the state playoffs in 2019.

Tuscaloosa Academy is entering its second game after losing its home opener, 15-7. Coach Todd Bradford is in his first season taking over for a team that made it to the state semifinals of the AISA Class AAA state playoffs. The Knights are led by a junior class which includes quarterback Whitt Winfield, wide receiver Jack Standeffer, middle linebacker Phillip Lancaster and safety Jordan Evans.

Winfield passed for more than 200 yards and one touchdown in the opener, with Standeffer tallying 84 yards on five catches with one touchdown.
