Paul Bryant offense finding its groove for season's stretch run

By: Brett Greenberg

TUSCALOOSA NEWS- The first four weeks of Paul W. Bryant Stampede football is something every player and coach wishes they could have another crack at.

Through four weeks, Bryant was winless. In the Stampede's last two weeks, the offense has averaged 32 points per game and earned two shutout victories after a 30-0 win over Central on Friday. The previous win, against Holt, was a contest that didn't count as it was scheduled to fill in for a forfeited game, but it gave Bryant momentum.

The offensive coordinator for the Stampede, Montez Shipman, uses two quarterbacks every so often in a game, something he does to keep the opposing defense guessing.

"Yea, these two dudes had a heated quarterback battle in the summer, but we felt more comfortable with giving Cam (Cameron Ellis) the starting job because he is a pure pocket passer with a great future, whereas Tobias (Burrell) is so dynamic with his legs that we need him on the field at all times."

Junior receiver Luther Watkins hauled in two touchdowns against Central, including a catch over a Falcons defender. Junior receiver Jordan Evans added another touchdown, bringing his total to four in two weeks.

Although it took over a month for the Stampede to reach its potential on offense, Shipman is pleased.

"These kids are so young and we knew that coming in, so it understandably took some time," he said. "The best part about this offense is that I get nearly all of them back next year."
