The No. 1-ranked Central girls basketball team defeated Selma, 55-21, in the Class 5A, Area 7 championship game on Friday night.

Here are three things we learned:

Lady Falcons use big second quarter

Central started slow on offense in the beginning minutes of the game.

Still, the Lady Falcons led 15-6 after one quarter. They went on a 17-4 run in the second quarter, extending the lead to 22.

"Our thing is to make sure we are not in foul trouble," said Central coach Michael Rivers. "We normally go eight to nine deep so we always will start a game slow and then pick it up."

Central guard Aja Wiltshire led the Falcons with 20 points.

Selma forward Aeraeonna Manuel scored 7 points in the loss. Central wins area for 10th year in a row

Central won the area championship for the 10th year in a row.

Rivers has been at the helm for each of them and says it speaks volumes about the legacy of the program.

"I always tell each team you haven't done anything until your senior year," said Rivers. "The younger girls understand they are the building blocks for a sustainable program." Rivers alluded to how this year's win is a bit special compared to years past.

"This year is a bit different with the pandemic," he added. "There's a lot more to it this year other than basketball."

What's next

The Lady Falcons will begin sub-region play Monday. Regionals begin Feb. 18 with all games being played in Montgomery, Jacksonville and Hanceville.

With the win, Central will be the host for the sub-regional round.

"We anticipate being at home through the regional and semi-finals," said Rivers.
