SAMANTHA — The Northside Lady Rams came away with a victory Thursday night, but the Holt boys defeated the Rams in the nightcap. Here are three things we learned:

Ironmen earn top seed in area tournament

In a game in which they never trailed, the Holt Ironmen held off a furious comeback effort by the Northside Rams to come away with a 53-42 victory, earning them the No. 1-seed in the boys area tournament.

The top seed was a tie between the Ironmen and American Christian Academy, but a called heads on a coin flip gave the Ironmen the top seed.

The tightly-contested matchup consisted of several technical foul calls and multiple stoppages of play.

The Rams were within two with roughly four minutes to play, but Holt extended its lead to 10 in the final two minutes after an offensive rebound by guard Taz Jordan, who completed the and-one. Jordan led the team with 20 points.

“Our guys kept their composure down the stretch,” said Holt coach Steven Watkins. “We were able to hit a few big shots and finally make some free throws.”

Guard Brian Perry led Northside with 14 points.

Lady Rams extend winning streak

The Northside Lady Rams are now 9-7 after their 38-26 win over Holt .

The Lady Rams have won three in a row. Coach Lance Green said he is proud of the way his team has bounced back after a slow start to the season.

“Defense and toughness,” said Green. “We got off to a slow start scoring, but our defense and rebounding got us going, just like all year.”

The Lady Rams had three players with double-digit rebounds: guard Karley Michaels (10), forward Bo Clark (13) and forward Shelby McBride (11).

The Lady Rams will carry their winning ways into a non-region matchup against Sipsey Valley on Jan. 29.

Lady Ironmen show fight despite limited roster

The Holt Lady Ironmen have only eight players, but show toughness and fight every time they step on the hardwood.

The Lady Ironmen are led by forward Kamiya Sneed who totaled 14 points in Thursday’s loss.

Coach Joyce Grant alluded to the challenges of having a short bench.

“We are a young team complied of mostly freshman," Grant said, "but they’re coming along and starting to play as a team.” The loss brings their record to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in area play.
