Longtime Bessemer Academy coach Josh Wright, a four-time state champion, was announced as Tuscaloosa Academy's new head football coach Thursday afternoon.

“The interest in football here is at an all-time high, and I can feel it. There’s a lot of people excited that want to get involved,” Wright said.

Wright spent 15 years at Bessemer Academy, appearing in nine state championship games while winning four. Wright finished with a record of 131-37 in the regular season and a playoff record of 25-8.

The Tuscaloosa Academy administration hopes he will bring the same success. Knights athletics director Todd Bradford said he can’t put into words what this hire means from the program.

“I’ve known Josh nearly my whole life, and he comes from a great family,” said Bradford. “We were able to take him from our rival school and the administration, and I know he has what it takes to win and build a sustainable program.”

Wright expressed his gratitude to Bradford and credited him for landing with the Knights.

“Todd kept this program alive last year, and he will be a part of my staff coaching. He's a good guy with a lot of knowledge and the players love him.”

Wright expects the Knights to play physical and tough with class and character.

“We want the other team to walk off the field and say, 'We just got beat by a classy team,'" Wright said.

Wright's teams have bonded from the players to the coaches, families and administration.

"We want to win now," Wright said. "No. 1 is the family approach and showing the kids that the coaches and community are behind them and care about them on and off the field."
